Who are the worksheets for?
The worksheets on lessonsforkindergarten.com are made for ages 2-10 years of age. The simpler activities like coloring and recognition worksheets are for younger students, whereas the worksheets that require students to read and write words are for slightly older students.
Please see the recommendations below if you are unsure of what worksheet you should use for your students. If your student has no prior knowledge of English, feel free to start from the beginning. I have labeled worksheets according to their level.
2-3 years old (level 1)
At the very start of your students journey, it is important not to overwhelm your students. Work on building your students vocabulary and sounding out letter sounds. Focus on building strength and dexterity in your students’ hands and fingers. Coloring and line tracing is a great place to start with.
If your student cannot hold a pencil yet, try using a crayon or thicker writing pencil. Students who are 2-3 years old vary in ability, so do not expect all students to understand yet.
There is a possibility that it might be too early to use worksheets. If this is the case, then playing activities with flashcards might be a better alternative. You can find thousands of FREE flashcards at flashcardsforkindergarten.com.
Level 1 recommendations | goal |
---|---|
coloring worksheets | improve dexterity |
line tracing | improve accuracy & precision |
letter recognition worksheets | recognizing letters |
reading letters & phonic sounds (A-a-apple, B-b-ball….) | learning phonic sounds of letters |
3-4 years old (level 2)
Continue to build your students vocabulary as well as using basic sentences. Start to read more books and follow along with your finger.
Focus on basic reading and uppercase letter writing. If your children can write uppercase without any help, then move onto lowercase letters. If not, then concentrate on reading and writing uppercase only.
Keep a lot of the focus on reading and building confidence in your students. Try reading as a group so all of your students can practice without feeling singled out.
Level 2 recommendations | goal |

coloring worksheets | color neatly inside the lines |

4-5 years old (level 3)
If your students have been learning from 2-3 years old, then by now your students can probably read very basic sentences and can write upper and lower case. Your children should now start to read very simple phonic reader books.
As for their writing, continue to practice upper and lowercase letters. Your children might even be able to write short words and maybe even short sentences. If not, do not worry. Just concentrate on their reading and continue to practice writing upper and lowercase letters.

Now your students should be able to write letters, basic words and simple sentences. There may be a lot of spelling mistakes, but just continue to practice and improve. Focus on strengthening reading and writing equally.
It is now time for your children to start reading independently. This will depend heavily on how long they have been learning how to read.
As for their writing, it is now time for your students to write words and basic sentences.

How to use our Worksheets
There are 3 ways to use the worksheets. The first way is to print the worksheets at the desired size and then give one to each student.
The second way is to print and laminate the worksheets. Once laminated, your students can use the worksheets with whiteboard markers. I have found that children enjoy using whiteboard markers more because they are easier to write with and any writing mistakes can be easily erased. Using laminated worksheets feels more like an activity than classwork.
When a student has finished a laminated worksheet, the teacher can quickly check the answers and then erase the student’s work. To clean the worksheets, simply wipe them with a tissue and hand sanitizer. In the past I have assigned the role of cleaning the worksheets to my students.
The third way to use the worksheets is to download a worksheet onto an iPad. You can then use an apple pencil to fill in the answers. This method is great for learning on the go. Open the PDF or JPEG in an app like ‘notes’ or ‘goodnotes’. It may be necessary to put on your devices rotate lock.
When using worksheets, please make sure that you model the sheet first. The best way is to first show the students how to do the sheet at the front of the class.
After your students have understood how to fill in the sheet, ask a student try one of the worksheet questions (an A3 version of the sheet is best to demonstrate with). If they make a mistake, demonstrate it again and have them correct their answer. Once you are sure your students understand, have your students sit at a table and have a student give out a worksheet to each student.
Remember that students often have to understand the rules of the worksheet as well as the English content. This is why it is often best to start with an easy worksheet first. Build confidence in your students so they are motivated to try it by themselves. If the worksheets are still too difficult, do not worry, just do more activities and games instead. Go at the students’ pace and build a strong foundation in the basic phonics sounds. Once your student has a strong basic understanding of English, then it is time to have fun with some worksheets : )
Why do we make worksheets for teachers?
Teachers know there are many worksheets available online. But it is often difficult to find the worksheet that is just right for your students’ level.
At lessonsforkindergarten.com, we have created a consistent style that matchs your students ability, regardless of level. We are continuously creating worksheets that are just right for your students’ reading and writing ability, whether they are picking up a crayon for the first time, or they are already on their reading journey.
Furthermore, the worksheets are often themed to create an extra sense of relation to the topic being taught.
Searching For Worksheets
It is often difficult to find worksheets that relate to the topic you are teaching. Whether it is numbers, colors, animals, or even space, lessonsforkindergarten.com has the worksheets you are looking for! Search for any keyword that relates to your subject, and then choose from the many worksheets available! Find coloring worksheets, tracing worksheets, word searches and more!
Why are worksheets useful
Worksheets are useful to your students because they help consolidate what they have just learned. Furthermore, worksheets help the teacher keep track of your students’ progress. If a worksheet is too easy for your student, then they are ready to move on. If the child is still struggling on certain questions on the worksheet, then the teacher can focus on that specific area and help the child to improve.
At lessonsforkindergarten.com, we know that sometimes teachers don’t have the time or the resources to design their own worksheets. That’s why at lessonsforkindergarten.com we have made worksheets relating to common teaching topics found in kindergartens and preschools all around the world.
